Some gifts have turned out to be great choices, while others were much less successful than we expected when choosing them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">I have put together some ideas that, based on my own experience, are worth considering for kindergarten and school Christmas gifts.<\/p>\n<h3>Christmas gifts for kindergarten children<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Kindergarten children are usually between 3 and 6 years old, so I would look for something playful, safe and simple enough for the child to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Sometimes parents agree on a price limit and everyone buys a gift for their own child. At my son\u2019s kindergarten, we once agreed that the children would only open their gifts at home. It reduced the comparison of gifts during the Christmas party, but I am fairly sure they still discussed the next day who got what.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">I have also learned that a practical gift for a parent is not necessarily a good gift for a child. One year, for example, we ordered personalised T-shirts for the children to wear during sports lessons. My child did not like the design and never wore his.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That is why I prefer kindergarten gifts that give the child something to do or play with and, if possible, can be used more than once.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Here are some gifts that both my child and I have enjoyed:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"true\">\n<li><strong>DIY kits:<\/strong> raising a small child means constantly encouraging them to try doing things themselves. This is why kits where children can actually make something work particularly well. Even if a child already has several personalised ornaments, they work well together on the tree.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Card games:<\/strong> there is a huge selection and they are often more affordable than board games. The best thing about a good game is that it also gives you a reason to spend time together during the holidays.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wooden blocks:<\/strong> it is surprising how creatively children can use very simple blocks. They do not need to be expensive, brightly coloured or unusually shaped. My nephew once received a set of plain rectangular wooden blocks and played with them longer than with any of his other Christmas presents.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sticker books or name stickers:<\/strong> a good choice for kindergarten-aged children. My son often used stickers much more creatively than intended and guarded them very carefully. Name stickers are another practical option for marking a child\u2019s belongings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modelling clay or playdough:<\/strong> your child probably already has a few moulds at home, but even without them there is plenty to make.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bath toys:<\/strong> especially suitable for younger children, although even first- and second-graders can still enjoy playing in the bath. We once received a funny sea creature that moved when you pulled a string, and it was used for a long time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gingerbread cookie cutters:<\/strong> finding interesting shapes may take a little effort, but animal-shaped cutters are usually a safe choice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interactive or flap books:<\/strong> a reliable choice for younger children. We read the same bedtime flap book so many times that it eventually fell apart.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fine motor skill toys:<\/strong> one of my child\u2019s favourites was a magnetic fishing puzzle. There are also lots of compact threading, hammering and other activity sets available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Origami kits:<\/strong> a simple activity that can be much more convenient than searching for instructions online. In younger classes, giving everyone the same or a similar gift can work well. With older children, there is more room to take individual preferences into account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Some classes organise a Secret Santa or draw gifts randomly. There is something fun about that, but there is also a risk. A child may choose something they personally find amazing, while the recipient has no interest in it at all. I still remember one child at school receiving another child\u2019s old and broken toy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For younger school children, I therefore tend to prefer thoughtful, similar gifts for everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Here are some options I have been happy with or would consider for a school Christmas gift:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"true\">\n<li><strong>Craft kits:<\/strong> Christmas is a good time for an activity that can be started straight away. It is simple enough for a younger school child, while an older child can experiment more with patterns and decoration. For older children, there are also electronics kits. I would just check whether the activity is more than a very short one-time project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diving toy or pool noodle:<\/strong> especially fun around the time children are learning to swim and also useful for family spa visits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rubik\u2019s Cube or Soma Cube:<\/strong> something a child can pick up again and again. It is also a good alternative to a phone while waiting for the bus or travelling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Puzzle toys:<\/strong> children can try different puzzles, swap them and challenge each other. I personally like Happy Cube 3D puzzles because they are lightweight and give children a fairly quick feeling of success.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Logic cards or puzzle books:<\/strong> not for every child, but a very good travel companion during Christmas trips.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Card games:<\/strong> for older children, the choice can already be more age-specific. Some of my favourites are Exploding Kittens, Monopoly Deal, 6 Nimmt!, Rat-a-Tat Cat and The Mind.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personalised water bottle or lunch box:<\/strong> most children already have one, but they also need replacing every few years. A good-quality personalised version is both practical and personal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Activity voucher for the whole class:<\/strong> the aim of class activities is often to create shared memories. For a school child, I would also think about whether the activity will still feel interesting to a slightly older child.<\/p>\n<p>A good Christmas gift does not have to be large or contain lots of different things. I would rather choose one thoughtful gift that makes the child want to open it and try it straight away.
